Healing Properties, Uses & Combinations

One of the most ancient and versatile medicinal herbs known to mankind, the numerous health implications of dried chamomile flowers are due to the high levels of disease-fighting antioxidants like terpenoids and flavonoids, found in the plant’s potent oils.

Chamomile is known to carry many physical healing benefits as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, as well as a nerve-soothing relaxant & sleep aid. Chamomile is anti-allergenic and the oil derived from the flowers contain potent antioxidant elements.

Its soothing capabilities can be applied to digestion, skin irritation, bruising, menstrual cramping, muscle aches, and headaches.

As a sleep aid, Chamomile soothes the nervous system, inducing relaxation and quelling anxiety; especially in its essential oil form.

The essential oil of Roman Chamomile can be diffused or added to the bath, or mixed with a carrier oil and used as a personal inhaler or applied directly to the skin. Any of these methods are used to induce relaxation for sleep or relief from worry or tension. Direct application can ease sore muscles and joints, and soothe skin irritations including insect bites.

We have several essential oil blends of Chamomile available at The Energy Within. We carry a night time blend crafted for sleep, a blend for calming kids, and tension relaxing blend by Plant Therapy.

As a sleep aid and relaxant, Chamomile is particularly beneficial for use with children.

Research and studies suggest that Chamomile can be a valuable addition to treatments for blood sugar regulation, chronic inflammation reduction, improving thyroid function, and lowering cholesterol and blood pressure; as it relaxes the vessels and arteries.

Additionally, Chamomile is known as the ‘Plants physician’. It has the ability to “cure” other ailing plants growing nearby. Not to mention, it is an effective insect & pest repellant.

Composition & Location

This botanical is known for both its Roman and German varieties. Chamaemelum Nobile (roman variety), is bitter, slightly sweet, and aromatic. Matricaria Recutita (german variety), is sweet & aromatic.

The roman variety is more commonly used as an essential oil as it contains more oils than the German variety. The medicinal properties of chamomile are concentrated in the oil of its flowers.

Metaphysical Uses & Combinations

Known as an herb for purification, healing, and regeneration; Chamomile has an energetic signature of peace and harmony. Known ritual uses for Chamomile include spells of protection and prevention of negative energy from entering the home. Sprinkle oil around your doors and windows or plant Chamomile outside near doors and windows. If you feel threatened, blend chamomile into a sachet to carry with you during your day.

You can also use chamomile in candle magic. Pulverize the dried flowers, and use them to anoint a green candle for money magic or a black one for banishing.
